About Canonicle

Canonicle is a daily word-puzzle inspired by Redactle. Each day, the text of one Bible chapter is shown with most words redacted. You guess one word at a time to reveal it everywhere it appears in the passage. When you think you know which book the passage is from, name it from the list of 66. You may then try to guess the chapter to earn a higher badge.

Keeping Canonicle ad-free

Canonicle has no ads and I'd like to keep it that way. Wrapping the Word of God in banner ads feels wrong, and your time in Scripture shouldn't be interrupted to pitch products. If the game has been a blessing and you feel led to give, your support helps cover hosting and keeps the game free for everyone.

Rules

  1. Type a word and press Enter. Every occurrence of that word reveals.
  2. A short list of common words (the, of, thee, thou, โ€ฆ) is pre-revealed and doesn't count toward your score.
  3. Numbers are visible. Punctuation is visible. Verse numbers are shown as small green superscripts.
  4. Tap "๐Ÿ“– Guess Book" to name the book. A wrong guess adds 15 to your score; a right guess wins.
  5. After winning, you may try to name the chapter. Wrong chapter guesses don't cost anything.
  6. Psalms and Proverbs are special โ€” recognizing the book isn't enough since each chapter is its own self-contained piece. You must name the chapter to win.
  7. Lower score is better.

Hints ๐Ÿ’ก

If you're stuck, the ๐Ÿ’ก Hint button reveals up to three clues, in order:

  1. Testament โ€” Old or New.
  2. Category โ€” broad genre such as Law, Historical accounts, Wisdom and poetic writings, Prophecy, Gospel, Letters and teachings.
  3. Theme โ€” a one-sentence description of what the book is about.

The number of hints you used is recorded alongside your final score. Using any hint limits your badge โ€” the top two tiers require zero hints.

Badges

Every completed puzzle awards a badge based on your score and how many hints you used.

Forfeited games receive no badge.

Modes

Signing in (optional)

Canonicle is fully playable without an account โ€” your daily progress and streak are stored in your browser. Sign in if you'd like:

You can sign in with Google or with a one-time code sent to your email. Your email address is private and is never shown on any page that someone else can see.

Sharing your profile (optional)

Each signed-in player has a profile at /u/your-username, but it stays private until you turn it on. From the History page, choose "Share my profile" to flip it public, then pass the link to a friend. There's no "leaderboard" โ€” sharing is one-on-one, an invitation to walk this together.

What a public profile does show:

What it doesn't show:

You can change your display name, pick a different username, or make your profile private again at any time from the Account page. We trust you to choose a name worthy of the One you follow โ€” a basic check rejects obviously offensive handles, but it's not a substitute for kindness.

A note on cheating: like Redactle, the puzzle text is delivered to your browser. Anyone who inspects the page source can find the answer. The game is a friendly challenge โ€” please don't.
